CHAPTER 10

ABANDONED

“You got all your stuff?” I ask Shaun as I talk with Shaun as we stand near his electric truck the next day.

“Yeah, this is my third trip back, and I think we are good for a while now,” answers Shaun.

I look at Shaun and feel a bunch of different emotions but I’m mostly worried and feel like his decision to live at the Haven doesn’t make much sense.

“I’m going to miss you around here,” I say to Shaun.

“Me too, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing each other. You and the guys can come to the Haven, and I’ll come back here,” replies Shaun.

“I guess Lisa hates it here that much huh?” I ask Shaun.

“Nah man, she just wants a change of scenery and to be close to Dr. Vargas,” answers Shaun.

I think about Shaun’s answer and think that it’s kind of a bullshit answer, but I’ll continue to support Shaun in whatever he does unless it’s something that is dangerous and will put himself or others at risk. I’ve always had this tough love relationship with Shaun since I met him back in middle school.

“Happy wife, happy life bra. We got your back. If you need us, you just let us know,” I say to Shaun.

“I feel bad leaving you guys, but you know I’ll be here whenever you need me,” says Shaun.

“It’s not goodbye, it’s I’ll see ya later. Remember you said that to me when I left Raleigh for Tampa,” I say to Shaun.

Shaun smiles at me and I can see that he feels somewhat torn about leaving Citrus Oaks.

“I’ll never forget you and Matt coming to my house and saying goodbye to me when I left for college with Bobby G,” I say to Shaun.

“Of course man, that was a sad day when you left,” replies Shaun.

“It was a sad day for me as well when I left you guys,” I say to Shaun.

“You know Ry, to be honest, before all this zombie shit, I missed ya. I missed you a lot. You left us in Raleigh and our group was different after you left,” says Shaun.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“When you left for college and then went back for med school, you were gone for like ten years. It was pretty tough not having one of my best friends around,” answers Shaun.

I think about what Shaun just said, and I’m kind of hurt by his statement.

Shaun must have seen the look on my face and says, “We all understood that you were doing big things in Florida, but the guys and I felt a little abandoned by you.”

Shaun gets a call over the radio from Lisa and Lisa asks, “You on your way Shaun?”

Shaun answers Lisa over the radio, “I’m coming back now.”

Shaun hops into his electric truck. I look at Shaun and I feel kind of hurt by Shaun’s comments.

Shaun looks at me and says, “I gotta get back but let’s keep in touch Ry.”

I try to put on a face to show Shaun that his comments didn’t bother me, and I reply to Shaun, “You got it, will do.
